Good news! By now many of you have heard that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in the 2010/2011 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, projects court reporting employment to "grow by 18%, reflecting the demand for real-time broadcast captioning and translating. Job opportunities should be excellent, especially for those with certification."

As a working court reporter this means you have chosen a profession with very positive prospects going forward. But it also means that the best career opportunities are available to those "with certification" and reporters who can provide realtime translation services.

The road to certification is potholed with examinations, which measure your knowledge of certain reporting areas and your writing skills. Statistics reveal that too many reporters are daunted by these exams. According to U.S. News & World Report there are "more than 50,000 court reporters in the United States," but less than 10% of all reporters are certified and realtime ready.

Bottom line? This means 90% of all reporters are stuck on career rungs that don't offer the highest paying or most rewarding work, yet they're working in an occupation whose professional opportunities are predicted to grow by 18%!

For the past two years, in response to the continual requests and inquiries we receive about NCRA exam preparation, we have offered webinars covering the skills tests and how to pass them. This year we're expanding our series and will cover the Written Knowledge Tests for the RPR, RMR, CCP, and CBC as well as the Skills Tests for those same four certifications.

Not only that but we've added a distinguished panel of guest reporters: Adam Miller, RPR, CRI, CSR (DE), Freelance Court Reporter from Middletown, DE; Tami Smith, RPR, CPE, CSR (MI), Official Reporter from Lansing, MI; and Karen Yates, CRR, CCP, CBC, CART provider and captioner from Minden, NV. Each of these panelists will talk about career opportunities within their area of specialization, and will also address the importance of certifications, giving you their tips and advice for passing the tests.

So make it your new year's resolution to get unstuck, to get certified. All kinds of good things will follow. Doors will open, you'll have more career options, you'll be able to choose work that may be more appealing, you'll get more job satisfaction, and you'll probably make more money.
