Reporters
all know this: The best work—yielding the highest
pay—goes to reporters who provide realtime or
expedited services. This is understandable since they
require an advanced skill level and, in general, clients
pay more for them. Also, many reporters work for firms
or courthouses within which there are pay differentials;
those holding specified NCRA certifications earn more.
The Federal court system, for example, rewards reporters
holding certain certifications with higher pay grades.
Many private firms do something similar by paying a
higher page rate or offering other benefits.
Only
a small percentage of all reporters provide realtime
services. A larger percentage provide expedited transcript
delivery services but the numbers are still dismaying.
The truth is that many more reporters could provide
both—with the proper help and guidance. What’s
holding you back?
- Are
you struggling with repetitive writing problems?
- Do
you hesitate when you hear certain words or phrases?
- Do
you consistently drag certain letters, such as the
final -L
or -S?
- Are
the wrong words or phrases mistranslating?
- Do
you struggle with words ending with “nd,”
“nt” or other difficult fingerings?
- Are
you taking and failing the NCRA skills exams and wondering
why?
- Do
you suffer from test anxiety?
If you
answered YES to any of these or feel that better writing
skills are within your reach—if you just had some
help getting there—then you should read on!
Having
better writing skills or being able to hang some letters
behind your name are important, no question. You earn
more money and enjoy more prestige among your colleagues;
both very nice. But as important, you’ll reclaim
huge chunks of your time.
When we talk to court reporters
about their jobs and their lives, we hear one thing
again and again, “I want to spend less time working
and editing transcripts and more time enjoying life.”
That’s something most of us can relate to, and
truly a goal worth striving for. However, it often seems
unattainable. Is it?
Nothing
is ever easy, but it isn’t nearly as hard as you
may think. Here’s why. In the past, if you wished
to improve your writing skills you confronted two major
obstacles. First, you had to find enough suitable material
with which to practice. That can be challenging enough,
but then follows the truly hard part: You must determine,
on your own, what your problems are and how to resolve
them. It is one thing to raise your speed using dictation
drills, but quite another to increase accuracy and work
out problems with your writing style.
So finding
suitable material to write is the first challenge, but
once you overcome that obstacle you’re then confronted
with another. You must analyze your notes to determine
where your errors are, what categories of errors you
have, and figure out how to resolve them. Taken together
and mixed in with the hustle and bustle of our personal
and professional lives, these two challenges are more
than most of us can overcome. The result is predictable:
Reporters languish at a skill level that is, in many
ways, a life sentence, condemned to a purgatory of back
pages and endless frustration.
This
webinar suite can help you escape that purgatory. Marybeth
will explore a revolutionary technology that makes it
possible for you to improve your writing skills, get
better accuracy, and resolve issues in your writing
style. It eliminates the need to continually search
out appropriate dictation material and it analyzes your
writing for you. That probably sounds too good to be
true – but it’s not. This technology is
called Realtime Coach™ and it’s so powerful
it is embraced by the National Court Reporting Association
and an unlimited trial version is available free to
every NCRA member.
Like
a phone call, it’s a two-way connection. As you
are seeing, hearing, and writing all kinds of drills
and exercises, at the same time Realtime Coach
is also receiving and assessing your writing. It uses
your CAT software and your dictionaries to assess your
accuracy; it uses special analytical tools to point
to problem areas, and it uses specially designed drills,
called Barrier Busters™, to help you overcome
problems that slow you down and reduce your accuracy.
The content is so diverse it is always fresh. The service
is available 24 hours a day so you can practice at your
convenience, not someone else’s.
If you’re
an NCRA member and haven’t tried Realtime Coach,
you’d probably like to know how to do so. Marybeth
will show you how to log on and obtain an account and
a password. More important, she’ll also show you
how to use it. Already have a Realtime Coach
account, but would like to get more out of it? Whether
you’re new to Realtime Coach or an existing
user, instruction is the meat of this webinar suite.
You can
work with Realtime Coach in so many ways: to
assess your current writing status, to enhance your
skills, to improve your translation accuracy, to spend
less time editing, and, yes, to pass certification tests.
Marybeth is going to show you how to get started, how
to use the different kinds of content available, how
to get the most out of them, how to use them to overcome
problems that plague your writing, how to overcome test
anxiety, and how to have fun in the process. She’ll
give you an overview of all the different features and
plans available, what they can do for you, and how to
use them.
This
is definitely a webinar you don’t want to miss.
It could change your life!
